This time old Philemon took up the pitcher, for he was curious to see whether there was any truth in what Baucis had whispered to him.

On taking up the pitcher, he slyly peeped into it; he was sure that it did not contain a single drop.

But all at once he saw a little white fountain, which gushed up from the bottom of the pitcher and filled it to the brim with foaming and delicious milk.

The supper being now over, the strangers asked to be shown to their place of rest;

and when Philemon drew Quicksilver aside, and inquired how under the sun a fountain of milk could have got into an old earthen pitcher, he pointed to his staff.

"I can't tell what to make of my staff," said Quicksilver.
