Long, long ago, our country fought a war to win freedom from England, for at that time England owned America. This was called the Revolutionary War. During those years of suffering, American boys and girls many times showed that they were brave and true. This story tells of a girl who did a brave thing in order to save her pet cow from the English soldiers.
很久很久以前，我们国家为了赢得自由与英国发生了一场战争，因为当时美国归英国所有。这就是美国独立战争。在那些艰苦的岁月里，美国的男孩女孩们多次表现出他们的勇敢和忠诚。下面这个故事讲述了一个女孩从英国士兵手里拯救她的宠物牛的英勇事迹。
At the time of the Revolutionary War, a brave little American girl named Anne Randolph lived on a farm not far from Philadelphia.
在美国独立战争期间，离费城不远的一个农场里住着一位名叫安妮·伦道夫的勇敢的美国小女孩。
Her father and her two brothers had joined the American army, that was led by General George Washington. Anne and her mother were left alone to take care of the farm. Two years before the time of this story Anne's father had given her a beautiful calf, and the two had become great friends. Whenever Anne went into the field, the young cow came to be petted. At one time during the war the English army was in Philadelphia. The soldiers, as they marched through the country, took the farmers' horses and cattle.
安妮的父亲和两个哥哥都参加了由乔治·华盛顿将军率领的美国军队。安妮和她的母亲留下来照看农场。在这个故事发生的两年前，安妮的父亲送了她一头漂亮的小牛，从此安妮和小牛成了好朋友。无论安妮何时去田野，小牛都要过来接受她的爱抚。战争期间，英国军队一度在费城待过，当士兵们从乡下路过时，他们就带走了农民的马和牛。
One day the soldiers came to the farm of Mr. Randolph. When they saw Anne's pet cow, they tied a rope about her horns and led her away. Anne begged very hard for her pet, but the soldiers only laughed at her.
一天，士兵们来到了伦道夫先生的农场。他们看见安妮的宠物牛时，在牛角上系了一根绳子牵着就走。安妮为她的宠物苦苦哀求，但是士兵们只是嘲笑她。
It did not take long for Anne to think what to do. She ran to the barn, jumped on her pony, and galloped away to see Lord Cornwallis, the general of the English army. It was a very brave thing for a little girl only ten years old to do.
没过多久，安妮就想好怎么做了。她跑到谷仓，跳上她的小马，疾驰着去找英国军队的将军康沃利斯勋爵。对于一个年仅十岁的小女孩来说，这是一件非常勇敢的事情。
A soldier was on guard in front of the house in which the general was living. “What do you want?" he asked Anne, as she galloped up.
将军的住所前有一个站岗士兵。“你要干什么？”当安妮骑马飞奔过来时，他问道。
"I must see Lord Cornwallis," she said. The soldier let her pass, for he thought that she had very important news to tell. When Anne hurried into the room, Lord Cornwallis and some of his friends were at dinner.
