Who were the first people to fly?
Two men from France flew a hot-air balloonfor twenty-fiveminutes over Pairs,
France,in 1783.
When was the first airplane?
In 1903,the American brothers Orville and Wilbur Wrightwere thefirst to fly an airplane with an engine.
The airplane flew for twelve seconds.
It travelled almost forty metres.
In 1909,Louis Bleriot flew from France to England.
In 1919,Alcock and Brown flew across the Atlantic Ocean.
In the same year,airplanes started to fly between Paris,
France and London,England every day.
The planes carried passengers.
People could now travel long distances by air.
Airports and runways were built for the new airplanes.
