Lesson 19: Sayings
第19课:谚语
Every society has sayings.
每个社会都有谚语。
What are sayings?
谚语是什么呢?
They are short sentences that describe something people believe to be true about life.
谚语是人们用言简意赅的语言来表达一些生活的真理。
But is life the same or different from society to society?
但是不同社会的生活是相同的还是不同的呢?
Certainly,people hope for,and fear,many of the same things.
当然,人们所希望的和害怕的大部分事情是一样的。
But societies have their own customs,and their own languages,too.
但是不同社会有自己的风俗习惯,也有自己的语言。
So what about sayings?
那么谚语呢?
Are they different from culture to culture,or are they the same?
它们是因文化不同而不同,还是相同的呢?
That's an interesting question,isn't it?
那是一个有趣的问题,不是吗?
Here are some sayings in English.
这里有一些英语谚语。
Many people who speak English know these sayings and know what they mean.
许多说英语的人都知道这些谚语以及它们的意思。
Are there any Chinese sayings like these?
汉语有像这样的谚语吗?
A penny saved is a penny earned.
省一分就是赚一分。
A watched pot never boils.
心急吃不了热豆腐。
Actions speak louder than words.
事实胜于雄辩。
An apple a day keeps the doctor away.
一天一苹果,医生远离我。
Don't count your chickens before they're hatched.
不要过早地盲目乐观。
Don't judge a book by its cover.
人不可貌相。
Good things come in small packages.
浓缩的都是精品。
He who laughs last,laughs best.
谁笑到最后,谁笑得最好。
In the land of the blind,the one-eyed man is king.
山中无老虎,猴子称霸王。
It's not whether you win or lose,it's how you play the game.
过程比结果更重要。
Many hands make light work.
众人拾柴火焰高。
Money can't buy happiness.
金钱不是万能的。
One man's meat is another man's poison.
萝卜青菜,各有所爱。
Prevention is the best cure.
预防是最好的治疗。
The early bird gets the worm.
早起的鸟儿有虫吃。
The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence.
这山望着那山高。
Too many cooks spoil the broth.
人多误事。
You can lead a horse to water,but you can't make him drink.
牵马到河易,让马饮水难。
You'll catch more flies with honey than with vinegar.
宽容比尖刻更有人缘。
At the Chinese Restaurant
在中餐馆——
Part One: Too Much Food
第一部分: 太多的食物
The Chinese restaurant was full of people.
中餐馆中人都坐满了。
Nick walked behind his friend Wu Yang to a big round table.
尼克跟着他的朋友吴阳到了一个大圆桌旁。
Nick smiled as Wu Yang introduced him to all his family.
在吴阳把他介绍给全家时尼克冲大家微笑着。
"Sit here," said Wu Yang's grandmother loudly,in Chinese.
“坐在这儿,”吴阳的奶奶用汉语大声说。
She pointed to the chair beside her.
她指着她旁边的椅子。
"She wants you to sit there," Wu Yang explained to Nick.
“她想让你坐在那儿,”吴阳对尼克解释道。
"But maybe I should sit beside her.
“但是或许我应该坐在她旁边。
She doesn't speak any English and ..."
她不会说英语并且……”
"Why?" said Nick."I'll be okay."
“为什么?”尼克说,“没事的。”
He sat down.
他坐下了。
Wu Yang's grandmother put a dumpling in her bowl.
吴阳的奶奶把一个饺子放在她的碗里。
Then she put two in Nick's.
然后她在尼克的碗里放了两个饺子。
Nick ate both his dumplings.
尼克把两个饺子都吃了。
Then he had some rice and chicken.
然后他吃了一些米饭和鸡肉。
It was delicious!
非常好吃!
Nick ate it all up.
尼克都吃光了。
The grandmother put some more food in his bowl.
奶奶在他的碗里放了更多的食物。
He ate that,too.
他也吃了。
He was starting to feel full.
他开始感觉饱了。
But as soon as his bowl was empty,the grandmother put more in it.
但是他的碗一空,奶奶又放了些食物。
Nick ate everything in his bowl,again and again,
尼克又把他碗里的东西吃光了,一次又一次,
and the grandmother kept giving him more.
奶奶不断地再给他添东西。
Nick looked up.
尼克抬起头来。
Nobody else was eating.
其他人都不吃了。
Wu Yang's little sister giggled.
吴阳的小妹妹咯咯地笑了。
Wu Yang was trying not to smile.
吴阳强忍着笑。
As the grandmother put another big spoonful of rice in Nick's bowl,
奶奶在把一大勺米饭放进尼克碗里时,
she said something loudly in Chinese.
她用汉语大声说了些什么。
Wu Yang stopped smiling.
吴阳不笑了。
People at the next table looked around.
邻桌的人们朝四周看了看。
Nick knew something was wrong.
尼克知道有些不对。
What was Wu Yang thinking?
吴阳在想什么?
What was Nick thinking?
尼克在想什么?

Read the story above.
读上面的故事。
The people in the story have a problem:
故事里的人们有一个问题:
they don't understand each other very well.
他们不是很了解彼此。
They want to be polite,but they are making mistakes!
他们想礼貌一点,但他们犯错了!
Are they important mistakes?
这些错误重要吗?
What will happen?
会发生什么事?
What will they think of each other?
他们会对彼此怎么想?
Write an ending for the story.
给故事写一个结尾。
On another piece of paper,explain why you chose your ending.
在另一张纸上解释为什么你要选择那样的结尾。
