The pay might not be the best—in fact, it might be non-existent—but volunteering for a campaign or an issues-oriented non-profit organization can be a great political career starter. If you’re a college student considering politics as a career, volunteer and intern as often as you can.
You’ll probably start out working on the ground and in the office doing the grunt work, but you’ll gain invaluable experience and a good picture of your possible career options. Again, many positions are unpaid, but you may get a small salary or stipend to cover expenses.
