After dinner, people stay up late to welcome the New Year. This is called (守岁).

One of the most exciting parts of Chinese New Year is red envelopes.
Red envelopes (红包) have money inside.
Parents and grandparents give them to children to wish them good luck.

The loud sounds are believed to scare away bad spirits.
